Pizza in a Frying Pan (Makes 4 medium pizzas)

With the cost of takeaway pizzas skyrocketing and even supermarket oven pizzas creeping up in price (not to mention the lack of toppings!), we’ve started making our own pizzas at home. The kids absolutely love it, and it gives us a fun way to spend time together in the kitchen. This recipe is simple, delicious, and guaranteed to be a hit every time!

Full disclosure: the pizza dough and frying pan concept are borrowed from the famous TV chef Jamie Oliver. However, we make our own sauce and get creative with the toppings—and it’s just too good not to share!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp Italian mixed herbs
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 500g plain flour
  • 300ml water (you may need a little extra)
  • Cheddar cheese (grated) — as much or as little as you like
  • Mozzarella cheese (sliced)
  • Toppings of your choice (e.g., pepperoni, red onions, peppers)

First Step: Make the Sauce

Start by making the sauce. Empty a tin of chopped tomatoes into a medium saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

Add the tomato purée, salt, pepper, mixed herbs, and oregano, then stir well. Let the sauce simmer for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavours to blend. Once it’s done, pop a lid on and set it aside to keep warm.

Make the Dough

Now for the dough! In a large mixing bowl, add the 500g of plain flour. Gradually stir in 300ml of water with a fork—sometimes I add a little extra if it feels too dry.

Once the dough starts coming together into a ball, dust a clean work surface with some flour and knead the dough for a few minutes until smooth.

Cut the dough into four equal portions and roll each piece out to the size of your frying pan (or a bit smaller if you’re using a smaller pan). If you’ve got a little extra dough, you could even make 5 or 6 smaller pizzas.

Time to Cook the Pizzas!

Heat a dry frying pan over medium heat. Place one rolled-out dough portion into the pan, cover with a lid, and cook for about 3 minutes.

After 3 minutes, remove the lid and flip the pizza base.

Spread a spoonful of your homemade tomato sauce over the base, then sprinkle as much grated cheddar as you like. Add sliced mozzarella on top, and if you’re feeling fancy, throw on some extra toppings—pepperoni, red onions, and peppers are our go-to!

Pop the lid back on and let the pizza cook for another 3 minutes or so.

For an extra step, I like to slide the pizza under a hot grill for a minute just to melt the cheese even more and get a nice golden colour. But honestly, it’s just as delicious straight from the pan!

Serve and Enjoy

Once the pizza is done, slice it up and enjoy! It’s quick, fun, and tastes miles better than any store-bought version. Plus, the kids will love helping out in the kitchen and getting creative with their toppings.
